BWX Technologies: STEM Academy

The XLR8-Lynchburg Regional Governor’s STEM Academy was designated the 16th STEM Academy in Virginia by the Virginia Department of Education in October 2012. A showpiece of regional collaboration and public/private partnerships, XLR8 is the only STEM Academy in the commonwealth housed on the campus of a community college that serves five local school divisions - counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and the city of Lynchburg. The curriculum of the STEM Academy is industry driven and focused on high-growth careers in the Lynchburg region which support three specialty areas: mechatronics/engineering, biotechnology/health science and cyber security. This provides students with an opportunity to earn up to 44 dual enrollment credits and up to two Career Studies Certificates upon completion of the XLR8 STEM Academy program. This year there are 10 engineering/mechatronics students at the STEM Academy in the Senior class. We have been asked to talk to the students, in person, and share information about our company.
