College of Southern Maryland Velocity Center

In celebration of National Manufacturing Day, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Velocity Center will invite middle school students to an exciting and immersive field trip centered on the theme “Creativity Meets Technology.” This hands-on experience is designed to introduce students to the dynamic world of modern manufacturing and makerspace technologies through interactive learning and creative exploration. Students will tour the makerspace, engage in two hands-on workshops, and learn how today’s manufacturers are combining innovation, design, and technology to build the future. Activities include assembling 3D printed characters and exploring laser-cut puzzle design—each tailored to spark curiosity and highlight real-world STEM and skilled trade applications. By the end of the day, students will showcase their creations, reflect on their experience, and leave inspired by the possibilities of future careers in manufacturing and technology. This field trip is part of a nationwide initiative led by the Manufacturing Institute to connect youth with the diverse opportunities available in modern manufacturing—helping build a strong, skilled workforce for generations to come.
